NO SANDPAPER! It's illegal and destroys your table tennis balls. I suggest a premade paddle if you're just starting out, seeing that custom paddles where you choose the blade (wooden part) and rubber are confusing and difficult to buy if you don't really have a true style. You probably do not want to spend $50 to start. I'd say go no higher than $30. Once you get really good and perfect your strokes, upgrade and get a custom paddle. Hopefully, by then you'll have read up a lot about table tennis and know what your style is and how to best capitalize on that.
